Two other drivers won their first feature races of the season and first of their careers at Rice Lake as a number of new drivers tuned up their cars for next weekend’s holiday doubleheader that will conclude the 2018 racing season in Rice Lake.

Rookie Modified driver Kyle Helling was just a couple laps short of winning his first ever feature event in the division when Mahder made the late race pass on him. After Mahder spun on the first attempt to start the race and went to the tail, Helling got the jump on Josh Hessler to lead the opening few laps. As Helling continued to hold the top spot, the battle for position was on behind him. Kevin Adams slipped up the track and gave up a couple spots while Grant Southworth found an opening on the high side and drove up into second.

He then began to put heavy pressure on Helling for the lead, diving inside him on a couple of occasions and once sliding into the lead in turn one, only to have Helling cross over him and retake the top spot. The first eight laps of the race then clicked off until Adams triggered the yellow when he spun in turn one and Ashley Anderson slid into him when unable to stop. Adams also went to the back while Anderson was unable to continue.

Helling started to extend his lead at this point as he got into a good groove and was pulling away from the pack as Southworth, Jason Gross and Scott Duval fought behind him. However, each time Helling would start to pull away, the yellow would wave again and the pack would be bunched up behind him.

These yellows allowed both Mahder and Adams to work their way gradually back up through the field and as the race reached its last half dozen laps, they were challenging Southworth for second.

Another spin set up a three lap race to the finish and it was a four car battle for the win. Helling got the jump on the start but Mahder charged in beside him while Adams was able to slip past Southworth and take third.

The final two laps saw the top three battling side by side for the win as all three were all out to the finish. Mahder got to the inside and took over the lead while Adams went to the high side. Helling was trapped between them and despite a fine run, he had to settle for third as Mahder recorded his first win of the year at Rice Lake and became the eighth different winner in the Modifieds. The top two finishers both went to the back for spins and then battled their way back to the front.

2nd Annual Mahder 55

It is often said, “They really wanted to win that one.” But believe me, in

Special indeed.

It was Kevin Adams, Cory Mahder, and Brandon Jensen winning the heats as Kevin Eder lead the feature early. Mahder moved from his fourth starting position to second and continued to attack the lower line as Eder charged up against the wall. Mahder powered under the leader to take the point but it was short lived as Eder used a slider to squeeze back out front in turn four a few laps later. Mahder continued to apply pressure on the leader and pull even on the back stretch as Eder ran on the very cusp of the edge in the ultra-high groove. There was little room for a mistake and Eder slapped the front stretch wall hard on lap 13. His car came to a stop on the raceway in turn one, his night was over, and Mahder was in the lead for the restart.

Although Mahder may not have needed a break as he was extremely fast already, he drove out front the remainder of the distance to take a very emotional and popular win. Behind him was Kevin Adams who had actually raced in the shadows of Mahder and Eder for several laps, but all eyes were on the battle for the point. He finished second narrowly over Jake Smith who had an outstanding run from ninth on the star-studded field, and came very close to taking the runner up position. It was Darrell Nelson and Dave Cain rounding out the top five.

The Wollak Construction WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series Mahder 55 paid $455 to start and $5500 to win and drew 28 of the finest Late Models to compete. A very hard and damaging heat crash involving Rick Hanestad and Jeff Wildung eliminated both cars from contention and the remaining 26 made up the feature field.

Jimmy Mars, A.J. Diemel, and Pat Doar won the heats one, two, three, and they finished the 55-lap feature in the same order. It was Mars winning the passing points having had started ninth in his heat and he redrew to stat the feature in third. It was Jeffrey Massingill on the pole with Pat Doar to his outside. Massingill lead early but Doar was able to work his way to the point by lap three. There was a multicar crash in turn one which slowed the action shortly thereafter, but it was Doar leading the restart.

Massingill didn’t go away as he drove side by side with the leader under green but Doar was able to best him for the position. Mars found his way past Massingill for second and AJ Diemel, driving for the injured John Kaanta, had moved into third. The leaders entered into very heavy lap traffic as Doar continued to use the high line to maintain the point, but Mars challenged below him, pulling even several times and taking the lead for one lap before Doar regained the same the next circuit. The amazing racing action continued as Diemel ran in third right behind them and Darrel Nelson moved into fourth.

Near lap 30, Buddy Hanestad broke down on the raceway and came to a stop in the apex of turns one and two. The caution was used for a preplanned fuel only stop on the backstretch as the race took a short break. They lined up for the restart with Doar out front and Mars choosing the outside of the second row with Diemel. Nelson restarted fourth with the seventh starting Jesse Glenz in fifth.

Doar returned to the high side under green as Mars attacked to lower to middle line. Mars found his way to the lead shortly after the restart and Glenz overtook fourth. Mars began to distance the field but Doar evened it out and actually closed the gap somewhat but jumped the cushion in turns one and two as Mars entered lap traffic. It was Diemel making a move to overtake second and he appeared to have something for the leader as he closed in. However, the race track began to take rubber late in the event as the last laps saw the leaders hug the tires on the inside of the track and drive the remaining distance home. It was Mars winning his second of two Mahder 55’s as Diemel came home in second. Doar finished his night in third ahead of Jesse Glenz and Mike Prochnow who moved into the top five late. Darrell Nelson, Marshall Fegers, James Giossi, Jake Redetzke, and Steve Laursen rounded out the top ten of a terrific feature.

Red Cedar Speedway: Hornet Endro Special featured at Dunn County Fair

he Red Cedar Speedway presented two nights of racing action at the Dunn

Dustin Doughty won the challenge.

The Pure Stock Hornet Challenge starting lineup was set by luck of the draw and Lucas Kallenbach and Kent Harmon represented the Pures from the front row. In the second row, Jess Seim and Jeremy Johnson trailed to the green in their Hornets. Kallenbach led lap one as Harmon used the higher line to overtake the lead on lap two. It was sixth starting Derrick Johnson who set up to give the crowd a thrill as he moved to the highline and closed into third. Johnson was able to dispatch of Kallenbach and pressure Harmon for the lead. With Harmon running low and Johnson high, Johnson inched to the point. Harmon wasn’t going to give it up though as he pressed harder and retook the position. Ninth starting Dustin Doughty was on rails as he moved in to tussle for the win. With two laps remaining, he pulled even with Harmon as Johnson shadowed closely in third. In a photo finish, Doughty won as Harmon came literally inches from sweeping the night. Johnson, who had brought the crowd to their feet earlier finished a very impressive third over the Pures of Kallenbach and Myers.

The Tim’s Automotive Modifieds were paced by Jay Richardson and Cory Mahder as Mahder took the initial lead and never looked back, leading the entire distance to the checkered flag. Fifth starting Ashley Anderson drove to second but was unable to run down the very fast leader. It was seventh and eighth starting Kevin Adams and Jake Hartung finishing third and fourth as Mark Gerth had a strong run in fifth. The only spin of the event occurred on the final lap as the lapped car of Jeremy Gibson spun collecting Mike Anderson as Anderson’s night ended on the back of a tow truck.

The Johnson Motors Super Stocks provided excellent racing action and an exciting finish which saw a Lucas Plank standing in victory lane. The Plank name has graced the winners circle multiple times throughout the years as Lucas sports the same number as the legend, Leon Plank. It was an exciting victory for him, his family, and the old school fans in the stands. It was the pole sitter, Rick Hallquist who led early but Plank drove to the point on lap two. Gunnar Watkins overtook second as seventh starting Curt Myers moved to third. Myers was able to get past Watkins as he set his sights on Plank. Methodically, he closed the gap and drove beside the leader to challenge for the win. The two raced side by side until Myers edged out front in the higher groove. Plank wouldn’t be rattled though as he fought back down low. Plank retook the lead and moved out to a slight advantage but in the waning laps, the leaders found heavy lapped traffic as Myers closed back in. It was Plank who was too fast tonight as he held his position and drove to the impressive victory. Myers was forced to settle for second as Watkins drove home in third. William Johnsen and Hallquist rounded out the top five.

The Southworth Chevrolet Midwest Modifieds were escorted by pole sitter Josh Hessler as outside front row starter Clark Swartz did all he could to make it two weeks in a row after a miserable start to the year in Menomonie. It was Swartz taking the early lead and looking strong when on lap three, a spinning Denny Cutsforth drew the caution. On the restart, Nick Koehler closed to challenge for the lead as he went side by side for first, and after a good battle, overtook the position. Koehler drove on to the win as Swartz ran a strong second. Shane Halopka came from eighth to third at the line as David Swearingen and Austin Ellis rounded out the top five.

The Conrad’s Auto Salvage Street Stock feature saw Jacob Hessler and Warren Hanson in the front row as Ron Hanestad pounced early for the lead. Michael Knudtson raced into second but was overtaken by Sam Fankhauser. The top three ran in a tight group but Hanestad looked stout in the lead. A spinning Hanson reset the field and on the restart, Fankhauser pushed up into Hanestad in turn three. Hanestad was physically forced out of his groove and Fankhauser overtook the point as Knudtson followed him through. Knutson was able to use an inside move on the leader and he began to lead the very tight top three parade to the checkers. It was Knudtson, Fankhauser, and Hanestad in a tight grouping at the finish.

The Kadinger Auto Salvage Pure Stocks saw Pat Smith and Cody Tisdale in the front row at the drop of the green but it was Kent Harmon who drove from fourth to the lead. Cars went three wide behind Harmon for second but two separate cautions set up a significant amount of passing for the remainder of the race. Both Lucas Kallenbach and Dustin Doughty found their way to the tail end of the field in separate incidents. It was Harmon stretching out his advantage as Brett Myers ran in second throughout the event; however, Doughty charged from the rear to overtake the runner up position late in the race. Myers held strong for third over the recovering Kallenbach who was followed to the finish by Dean Pronschinske.

The WAYY 790 Hornets were led to green by Derrick Johnson and Jess Seim as the two held a good race for the lead but a caution reset the field. On the second attempt, Johnson took the lead which he would never relinquish as he drove to the checkered flag undaunted. Jess Seim raced strong in second until he was overtaken by William Voeltz late in the event. A green, white, checkered finish set up by the breakdown of Leslie Jackson did little to upset Johnson’s dominance. Voeltz followed him home ahead of Seim, Armond Love, and Jeremy Johnson.

By Brad Erickson

http://redcedarspeedway.com/Results/2016/results070816.html

Three More New Winners in RLS Action

Ashley Anderson started to close up gradually on Mike, but without the

Ryan Viltz came from the fourth row to top the biggest individual field of the year, thirty two Midwest Modifieds, for his first win on the year and was joined as a new winner by Mike Anderson and George Richards. Hunter Van Gilder, meanwhile, won his second Street Stock feature of the year here and Curt Myers, with his first Super Stock win of the year to go along with two Midwest Modified wins earlier this year, becomes the top winner at the speedway to this point. The largest field of the year, ninety nine cars, signed in to race on Saturday night.

Nineteen cars took Shaun Cimfl's green flag for the Midwest Modified main event with Bryce Johnson and Austin Ellis battling briefly before Ellis secured the top spot. Austin was immediately challenged for that top spot by Grant Southworth and a fast moving Michael Truscott. Viltz, meanwhile, shot to the high side of the track and quickly moved up from his seventh starting spot.

In one of the most spectacular moves of the season to date, Viltz got a great run off turn four and squeezed past both Truscott and Southworth down the front chute and shot into the second spot. He then continued to work the high side and blew past Ellis to take over the lead, an advantage that he quickly built upon.

Meanwhile, Truscott slipped under Ellis to take over second with Southworth motored past Ellis also as both tried to track down Viltz. The lone yellow and the only car not to finish the event was Tanner Byholm who spun with seven laps complete and called it a night.

Viltz continued to work the high side with Truscott and Southworth restarting right behind him and Ryan was gradually able to extend his lead over those two. Charging up through the pack was Shane Halopka and Joe Chaplin Jr as they fought to get into the top five. Halopka moved past Ellis for a position with Chaplin Jr. also doing so.

Viltz was not pressed the rest of the event as he continued to work the high side and drive on for the win. Truscott finished a strong second to back up last week's win here with Southworth following. Chaplin Jr. continued his late race charge as he drove past Halopka to take the fourth spot on the final lap.

Tim McMann led the opening laps of the Modified main event, a race that would go green to checkered without a single slow down. McMann worked the low side of the track as he edged past Pat Hoffman early and then soon was pressured by Mike Anderson for the lead. Anderson tried the inside but when that line was blocked, he moved to the higher side of McMann and drove past him in turn three to take over the top spot. Anderson started to pull away as McMann was soon challenged by another Anderson, this one Ashley. Coming from the third row, Ashley also moved to the higher line and gradually closed on McMann for second, also making his pass in turn three. Ashley then set out after Mike as Andersons dominated the front of the pack. Cory Mahder was also on the move after starting in row four and he to closed on McMann.

Ashley Anderson started to close up gradually on Mike, but without the assistance of a yellow flag to bunch up the field, the distance was just too much to cut and Mike, who continued to run a smooth race, drove home for the win, with Ashley several car lengths behind in second. Mahder got past McMann for third in the last going and Hoffman had another good run to complete the top five.

After a first lap spin by Rob Holmstrom Jr the Pure Stocks ran green to checkered with George Richards stopping Jason Havel's win streak at three in a row. Actually, for most of the race it looked like youngster Alex Smith was going to take his first ever career win at Rice Lake until late in the contest things took a bad turn for him.

Smith started on the pole and had a great battle in the early going with Tucker Quinn before assuming the top spot. Smith gradually extended his lead to several car lengths as Quinn was being challenged by Richards and Havel for second. Havel, who started ninth in the field due to his three straight wins, took some time to get through the pack but he soon was moving his way toward the front.

Smith had built up a nice sized lead but once Richards cleared to the second spot, he began to methodically move in on Smith who soon began to feel the pressure as Richards closed. Smith slid a little high and Richards closed right up behind him. Then Smith again slipped high out of turn four and banged into the wall hard with Richards ducking under him to take over the lead.

Smith tried to charge back but he pounded the back stretch wall even harder when he got to high and he damaged his race car, but was able to slow and limp off the track without triggering a yellow. This moved Havel into second and he set off after the new leader. However, Richards worked lapped traffic well and while Havel was able to close to within three car lengths on the last lap, George drove home for his first win of the year here. Havel settled for second after having won the first three features of the season and Joel Hinrichs made a nice run to finish third. Quinn settled for fourth and Randy Graham had another solid run to complete the top five.

The Street Stock feature was a two car battle all the way with Van Gilder holding off Cody Kummer to take his second win of the year at Rice Lake. In the early going Kolby Kiehl and Ryan Glembin raced side by side for the lead with each sharing the top spot at some point during the initial laps. Van Gilder and Kummer were right behind the lead duo and when the openings broke, Van Gilder was in the right spot at the right time and shot past Kiehl to take over the lead. Kummer quickly followed suit and the battle for the lead was on.

Van Gilder showed the way but Kummer was literally right on Hunter's rear bumper as he probed for an opening, attempting to try both high and slip under the low side. However, Van Gilder remained in the groove and Kummer couldn't muster enough speed to slip past.

With three laps to go, a spin triggered the first yellow of the race and bunched the field. This was Kummer's chance but Van Gilder got away quickly on the green and in the remaining three laps Kummer couldn't muster a charge as Van Gilder took his second victory of the season. Glembin and Kiehl continued their nearly race long battle and in the end, Glembin took his best finish ever at Rice lake with a strong third place showing with Kiehl right behind him. Kevin Bogdanovic recovered from a late spin to charge back up and complete the top five.

While the other four feature races had a combined four yellow flags, the Super Stock main had a mind boggling nine yellow flags before the race shortened event could be completed. While Myers found the lead early and remained relatively unchallenged, the number of twists and turns among the other contending cars was stunning.

John Erickson sat on the pole with Terran Spacek to his outside and they raced side by side on the opening lap. However, Myers was right behind Erickson and he found an opening on the low side and shot into the lead early. As Myers extended his advantage, Kevin Burdick and Jeff Klopstein Jr were working their way into a challenging position. Myers had built up a solid lead but when Klopstein Jr got to second, he quickly began to cut into the advantage as he worked the high side of the track. Klopstein Jr had cut into Myer's big lead and was just ready to challenge Curt when Klopstein Jr rolled to a halt, the victim of distributor failure.

On the green, Myers again assumed the lead but Burdick and Shane Kisling were arguing about the second spot. In fact, they tangled as they headed into turn three with Kisling banging up against the wall and triggering another yellow. Kisling was restored to his second position but unknown to him, his car had suffered some front end damage and on the green his car shot straight up the track and into the wall hard in turn one, again resulting in another yellow.

After this, a series of four more yellow flags flew for various spins. Finally the last couple of laps were successfully completed and Myers, who wasn't challenged at the end, took the checkered for his first Super Stock win of the year and third overall. Eric Olson started eleventh and managed to keep his car out of tangles and spins and drove home for the second spot, edging Bart Steffen for that position. Nick Oreskovich spun on lap two, went to the tail and worked his all the way back up to fourth at the end, with Nick Traynor completing the top five in what was the longest feature race of the season.

Next Saturday night the racing action will continue with all five classes again slated to take to the track. Warm ups start at 6:30 p.m with racing to follow immediately.

Written by: Ed Reichert

Diemel Dominates RCS

The Tim’s Automotive Modifieds were paced by Kerry Halopka and Mike

Kevin Bogdanovic scored an exciting win that saw three cars within a car length as they flashed across the finish line while also winning feature races in not quite som dramatic style were Michael Truscott, Matt Leer and Jason Havel.

It was a bone chilling night for racing in northern Wisconsin but a hearty crowd was on hand to see the biggest field of cars yet this season as ninety five racers from three states signed in to race Saturday.

Twenty one of them took Shaun Cimfl's green flag for the Super Stock main with rookie driver Adam Soltis taking the early lead. Soltis was challenged first by Terran Spacek and then Jeff Klopstein Jr. for the top spot while Curt Myers and Oreskovich led the pack of those charging to the front.

Klopstein Jr. took over the lead as he swept around Soltis but Myers was a man on a mission as he passed Soltis and then challenged Klopstein Jr. for the lead. Oreskovich was also on the move as he too used the high groove to pass Eric Olson and Simon Wahlstrom and move into fourth and then challenged Soltis for third.

Myers made several attempts to move past Klopstein Jr. but each time he was repelled. The race was one lap short of its midpoint when the first yellow flew for a spin. On the green, Myers got a great run on the outside and swept past Klopstein Jr. on the high side to take over the lead, only to pull up lame in turn four with a powerless car. The yellow waved again, Klopstein Jr. was restored to the lead and Myers was done.

Oreskovich used the same move as Myers on the green and he made it stick too as he drove past Klopstein Jr. to take over the lead. Oreskovich then pulled away from the field as the remainder of he race stayed under the green. Klopstein Jr. was alone in second and the real battle was for third as Wahlstrom, Soltis, Olson, the Spacek duo of Randy and Terran and Aaron Wilson all battled for position.

Oreskovich rolled on and was unchallenged the last few laps as he earned his first ever at this track. He will remain the Super Stock point leader, even though he will vacate that position when northern tracks open in the coming weeks. Klopstein Jr. finished a fine second while Soltis recorded his best finish in the Supers. Olson made a nice charge to end up fourth ahead of another rookie in Wahlstrom.

The Street Stock feature saw the smallest field of cars but that didn't keep it from being a wild event with more than its share of yellow flags and a thrilling finish. Cooper Berlin and C.J. Wagner battled for the lead on the opening lap of the feature race but two yellows in the first three laps for spins shuffled the field early and often.

Bogdanovic came up from the second row, dove to the low groove and found himself in the lead. Soon he was challenged by Jimmy Randall, running the higher side of the track as he likes to do. Several times he pulled up beside Bogdanovic but just couldn't quite pull off the move to take the lead. Yellows for spins and stalls kept the race from gaining much momentum but each time racing resumed, the same scenario took place as Bogdanovic remained glued to the bottom and Randall tried to drive around him.

After Ashley Wahlstrom hit the front stretch wall and triggered another yellow, the call from the officials was to shorten the race by five laps which set up a green, white and checkered finish. Again on the green, Bogdanovic continued to lead with Randall providing a renewed challenge for the lead. However, this time they were joined by Cody Kummer who was riding the bumper of Bogdanovic. The leaders hit the final corner side by side as Randall tried to drive by on the high side and as they flashed across the finish line, Bogdanovic finished up a half car length in front of Randall with Kummer another half length behind. Sam Fankhauser and Ryan Glembin completed the top five.

The Midwest Modified feature was a real tight one for the first half of the event until Truscott found a fast line around the track and was able to pull away. The first seven laps were frenetic as Bryce Johnson and Paul Suzik ran side by side for the lead with Tyler Vernon and Truscott right behind them. The traffic was very tight as the top eight cars pulled away from the field and were running in a close pack.

Suzik was able to edge into the lead and Truscott passed first Vernon and then Johnson to move into second when the yellow waved for the sole slowdown of the race.

On the green, Truscott got a good run on the high side and was able to slip past Suzik and take over the lead. Once in front, he gradually pulled away from the field and developed a comfortable lead. Vernon pulled in to challenge Suzik for second and after a brief battle, Vernon was able to take over the position.

But the driver on the move was Ryan Viltz. Mired in the eighth position at the halfway point, on the lone restart Viltz jumped to the high side of the track and made that line work. With the majority of the field racing lower on the track, Viltz started picking off car after car as the laps ran down. He swept past Curt Myers, Deven Van House and Joe Chaplin Jr. and continued to charge. While Truscott rode home unchallenged for the win, Viltz pulled up beside Vernon on the last lap and in a photo finish, nipped Vernon for second at the line. Chaplin Jr. came home fourth with Shane Halopka completing the top five.

The Modified feature got off to a slow start when Kevin Adams spun in turn one and collected a couple of cars. After sorting out that event, the race resumed with Matt Leer edging out ahead of Neil Balduc for the lead. Balduc was running close and putting the pressure on the leader while Cory Mahder moved up into third. Leer started to pull away with the top five runners spreading themselves out. Gradually, Mahder started to close in on Balduc with Kevin Eder also starting to bunch up behind the leader.

Leer continued to roll and he had no problems as the rest of the race ran green, he had no challengers and he took a relatively easy win. Balduc fought off the late challenges of Mahder and Eder to finish second with Ashley Anderson completing the top five.

The biggest field of Pure Stocks of the season was on hand Saturday, and despite that plus the fact that he was handicapped to the ninth starting position, Jason Havel still rode home with his third straight feature win in the division. Krysta Doughty took the early lead over a challenging Brent Miller and Joel Hinrichs while Havel was on the move quickly to race into a challenging position. There were three yellow flags before two laps could be completed as there was considerable shuffling of positions due to the slow downs.

Doughty continued to lead but following the third restart, Havel was able to get a run on her and slip past into the lead. Hinrichs continued to challenge for the second spot while behind them the spins and collisions continued to break out as he proved hard to get more than a lap or two put together before the yellow would once again fly.

Finally, a green, white and checkered finish was called for. Havel pulled away from the pack once again and drove home unchallenged for his third straight here this year. Doughty had a stiff challenge from Hinrichs at the end but she held on for second as he debut here this year was a successful one. Hinrichs finished a very close third and Andy Ladd also had a sterling run for fourth. Randy Graham moved to the front, spun and then worked his way back up to a top five finish.
Following the race, the shocks of the winner and third place Hinrichs were claimed and they accepted the claim so the official finish was unchanged.

Saturday night racing now moves into the month of May with four shows scheduled and warmer weather promised. Regular five division programs dominate the next three Saturday nights while the first special event of the season comes on May 28th when the UMSS(Upper Midwest Sprint Series) comes to town with both winged and traditional nonwinged Sprint Cars joining the regular five class program.
As always, warmups start at 6:30 p.m with racing to follow directly.

Written by: Ed Reichert

RCS Features Repeat Winners

The Tim’s Automotive Modifieds heat winners were Matt Leer, Cory Bruggeman,

Feature winners included Jake Redetzke, Kevin Adams, Curt Meyers, Travis Anderson, Sam Fankhauser, Kent Harmon, and Derrick Johnson.

The T.L. Sinz Plumbing Late Models heats were won by Jesse Glenz and Jim Mars as Buddy Hanestad and Chad Mahder led the feature to green. It was Mahder in the early lead as Buddy Hanestad followed in second. Hanestad’s car was upset in a rut and spun in turn two on the second lap. He stayed on the throttle and came to rest nearly straight as the entire field narrowly missed him in a fine display of driving talent by everyone involved.

On the restart, Mars made a bold move to become a factor from his eighth starting position but it was fifth starting Redetzke who drove to the lead and on to dominate the event. As Redetzke drove to over a straight away lead to the checkers, Mahder battled with Mars and Kaanta. Mars moved into second but wasn’t able to carve into Redetzke’s dominance as Kaanta wrestled away third. Mahder finished fourth as last place starting Jason Krohn finished fifth at the line.

The Tim’s Automotive Modifieds heat winners were Matt Leer, Cory Bruggeman, and Kevin Adams as Kerry Halopka and Cory Mahder owned the front row of the feature. After a failed first attempt at a start, the field came to green with Mahder claiming the spot. A quick yellow flag however involved Matt Leer, Tim Johnson, Robbie Johnson, Bryan Hessler, and Jody Bellifeuille. Tim Johnson and Hessler were unable to continue as Leer was sent to the rear.

It was Mahder on the start as Halopka settled into second. Kevin Adams drove inside third and second and set sail to track down Mahder. Adams caught Mahder and after a spirited battle for position, moved to the lead and pulled away. It was Adams continuing the defending National Champions theme on the night as he drove to the checkered flag. Mahder finished a strong second as Halopka impressed in third. Paul Nitzik drove to fourth and Bruggeman finished in the fifth spot.

The Johnson Motors Super Stocks included heat winners Curt Myers and Ben Hillman as they were led to green by Tony Falkner and Luke Schultz in the feature action. Falkner took the lead as Hillman challenged up high but a spinning Adam Soltis slowed the action. Again Falkner led the group under green but starting eighth is seemingly meaningless to Curt Myers, as with a big move he took over the point. Myers has been the giant who seems impossible to slay in Menomonie in 2016 as he drove into the night to yet another feature win in his bid to repeat as National Champion.

Seventh starting Time Johnson, 2015 runner up in the national points, drove to second and a significant lead over third finishing Lucas Plank. Plank himself impressed over Gunner Watkins who drove from last on the grid to finish fourth. Bart Steffen rounded out the top five in what had been great racing action from third on back. Falkner held the position well but was eventually overtaken as the race settled out in the final laps.

The Southworth Chevrolet Midwest Modifieds had four heats won by Grant Southworth, Shane Halopka, Nick Koehler, and Jake Smith, as George Truscott won the B-Feature earning the right to start near the back of the A main. A front row of Travis Anderson and Shane Halopka promised for a good race and no one involved disappointed. Anderson, whose car was nearly destroyed in the Punk Manor to end last season and severely damaged twice already in the previous two nights at the Red Cedar Speedway this year, quickly proved he was fast and grabbed the lead. Southworth moved from his second row start into the second position.

The yellow flag flew early as Tony Schill came to a stop in turn two and Gunnar Watkins retired under caution. It was Anderson out front on the restart but two laps later, Halopka violently struck the turn one wall drawing the caution and ending his night. Again Anderson led the field on the green but Tanner Byholm was squeezed into the wall on the start. The track was cleared and Southworth and Smith lined up in row two to challenge for the win. Upon going green, the two battled for position and Anderson tried to drive away. Smith pushed up the track, Southworth took the position, and eighth starting Koehler took advantage and claimed third.

As the race came to its conclusion, Southworth challenged for the lead and the two drove side by side. In the final lap, Southworth had a great run but Anderson was too tough, taking the win at the line. Koehler lurked immediately behind in third as Jake Smith recovered for a strong fourth and Austin Ellis impressed in fifth.

The defending National Champion, Tim Johnson, won the heat as the Conrad’s Auto Salvage Street Stock feature was paced by Ashley Wahlstrom and Ron Hanestad. Hanestad took the early lead as they went three wide behind him and three wide behind the group fighting for second. Seven cars raced in a very tight group until Sam Fankhauser grabbed the lead on lap two. Michael Knudtson found his way to second and the lone yellow in the event flew for debris on the track.

On the restart, Fankhauser held the point and Knudtson chose to start on the outside of Hanestad in row two. It was Fankhauser with a strong run, essentially unchallenged to the win. Knudtson held a solid second as Hanestad led Cody Kummer and Karl Genett to fill out the top five.

The Kadinger Auto Salvage Pure Stock heat winners were Mike Knopps and George Richards as Dean Pronschinske and Jeremy Dahl had the honors of the front row at feature time. An aborted first attempt at green saw Dahl drive to the lead in the second attempt. Brett Meyers moved to second to challenge but it was eighth starting Kent Harmon using the low line to drive to the front. Richards and Knopps followed through to second and third. Richards moved to the high line and drove into the lead as Harmon battled back down low. The two raced side by side as Knopps lurked immediately in their shadows.

Harmon edged into the lead as Knopps followed in the low groove to second. Richards drove hard to regain the position and was scored in second at the white flag. The three raced very closely on the final circuit and went three wide in turns three and four as Harmon gained the advantage toward the finish line. An unrelated caution flag was displayed before they finished their charge and the amazing race finished under yellow. The white flag lap was how they were officially scored with Harmon winning, followed by Richards, and Knopps. It was Brett Meyers and Jeremy Dahl filling out the top five.

The Value Implement Hornet heats were won by Derrick Johnson and Bradley York as Jordan Kuhn and James Kurschner paced the field to green in the feature. It was Kurschner grabbing the point until eighth starting Derrick Johnson carved his way to the lead on lap two and never looked back on his drive to the checkers. William Voeltz and Dean Butler made it a three car battle for second as Voeltz claimed the spot. Butler battled with York for position finishing third and fourth respectively. Sean Svee rounded out the top five.

The Red Cedar Speedway returns to racing action on Friday, May 06, 2016, with the WISSOTA Poly Dome Dirt Track Series sanctioned Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, Modifieds, and Late Models along with the Kadinger Auto Salvage Pure Stocks and Value Implement Hornets.

Written by: Brad Erickson

Firecracker/Relay at the Races Special Winner

Mahder has been racing through a lot of tough luck this season but

Again in this race, it was another Baxter, this time Dave, who provided the challenge for the race distance. Mahder got the early jump on Jake Hartung but Baxter came roaring up from the second row to quickly move into second and challenge Mahder for the lead.

Following a lap four yellow for a spin, Baxter dove low in turn two and pulled up beside Mahder in a race for the lead, but Cory worked off the cushion and held off Baxter while Hartung remained a close third. Scott Duval moved into the fourth spot with Mike Anderson, Kevin Adams and Kerry Halopka battling behind them.

Mahder continued to hold the lead while Baxter pushed hard and raced two car lengths behind as the top three cars worked the cushion. While they remained close, no one was able to execute a change of position but just as they caught lapped traffic, another spin with only two laps to go slowed the field again.

However, Mahder got a great start and opened a slight lead over Baxter and over the last two laps, Cory continued to show the way as he drove home for the win with Baxter and Hartung trailing. Adams made a late rush and moved ahead of Duval to finish fourth.

Written by Ed Reichert

WISSOTA Race of Champions Night Winner

The Tim’s Automotive Modifieds heat winners Jesse Glenz and Ashley Anderson

Several hundred feature wins were represented in the elite group. The remaining field was further compiled of excellent runners. Add this to the fact Mahder went from eighth to second and Adams from sixth to win the first heat, and Leer won the second heat from fifth, it appeared as if action was guaranteed.

The first ten laps of the feature was outstanding as Adams worked high and Mahder low for two laps at the green until Adams had to grab a handful of steering wheel as he bounced through turn two and Mahder secured the point. Adams began to lurk toward the front as Leer secured third and Anderson and Jetvig battled for the fourth position.

A caution flag flew just as action was being spread everywhere on the track, drawing the group tight once again. On the restart Anderson came to life but soon his left front suspension broke as he three wheel the car into third and tried to close on the leaders. His modified dug into the racing surface in turn three and as his complete left suspension and wheel tore free from the car and the yellow flag flew once again.

On the restart, Mahder powered to the lead and led the remaining one third of the race. Adams lost a position to Leer but battled back as David Baxter joined the battle for third. Mahder was never seriously challenged the rest of the way as he drove to a what became a solid victory late in a race that was packed with action for two thirds the way through. Adams finished second, Baxter drove from 14th to third, Leer and Kerry Halopka, who has made an impressive move from the Midwest Modified to the “A-mod” finished out the top five."
